Recipe: Golden Turmeric Tea
Turmeric, a member of the ginger family, gives that beautiful golden color to many dishes in Indian cuisine. This magical root has so many healing properties! It’s biggest superhero strength comes in the form of curcumin, a compound that has been shown to reduce inflammation in the body. Many more controlled, human studies are coming out all the time showing that Turmeric could be a key factor in helping to prevent/reduce the plaque that develops on the brain, leading to Alzheimers and dementia.
We recently made this special tea and found that it is such a delight to experience in terms of its unusual taste and creamy texture. Sure, regular consumption of Turmeric throughout your life is very healthy…but in the immediate sense the experience of drinking this tea is so lovely and calming. There is ghee (clarified butter) in this tea, which will help soothe and “weigh down” your anxious, monkey mind. “Butter in tea?” you ask? Yes. Ayurvedic medicine often calls for ghee, which quickly and effectively transports nutrients throughout your body. You need a little fat to help get the good stuff to “stick”, on other words. Ghee does have trace amounts of dairy, but because it is purified it seems to be safe for most people who are lactose intolerant. You can find handy jars of it at Trader Joe’s. Raw honey is a “benign sweetener”, as it has many trace minerals, nutrients and antibacterial properties, and isn’t absorbed and processed the same way sugar is in the body. And coconut milk contains lauric acid, a very beneficial fatty acid that nourishes the body.
